Full Description
Makepung is unique to Jembrana, teams of water buffalo, harnessed in pairs to decorated wooden carts, race at full speed along a dirt track while jockeys drive them on. It began as a way for farmers to pass time between harvests and grew into a serious regional competition with local prestige at stake.
The main championship season runs July to November, but smaller races for visitors are held roughly every two weeks year-round on a dedicated track near Perancak, about 10 km south of Negara. It's loud, dusty, and genuinely local, very little about it has been reshaped for tourism.
Our Review
Water buffalo harnessed in pairs to decorated carts, driven at full speed down a dirt track. Makepung exists only in Jembrana. It started as something farmers did between harvests and became a competition with real local prestige attached.
It is loud, dusty and almost entirely unreshaped for tourism, which is the reason to make the drive west. Championship season runs July to November, with smaller races roughly every two weeks year-round on the track near Perancak, about 10km south of Negara. Race days shift, so confirm the schedule locally before travelling. We rate it among the few things left on the island where you are plainly a guest at someone else's event.
