South Bali is where most people land and most people stay, and for a first trip we think that is the right call. The airport is here, and so is almost everything the island is known for: Seminyak for dinner and sunset, Canggu for surf and cafés, Uluwatu for the cliffs, Jimbaran for seafood on the sand, Nusa Dua and Sanur for calm water.
The catch is that it is busy, and traffic will take more of your day than the map suggests. Short distances are not short here. We would still base a first visit in the south, then give two or three days to somewhere quieter to see a different Bali. If you came looking for empty roads and village life, this is not that part of the island.
