North Bali is the side most itineraries skip, usually because of the drive. The roads in from the south climb and wind through the highlands, and they take longer than you expect. We think it is worth it, but only if you stay a night or two rather than trying to see it and get back the same day.
Lovina is the coastal base, with dark volcanic sand and the sunrise dolphin boats. Inland, Munduk runs cool and green, and the waterfalls around Sekumpul are the best on the island in our opinion. Singaraja, the old colonial capital, sits just east of Lovina. What you will not find here is nightlife, beach clubs or shopping, and most people who make the drive are fine with that.
