good to know before you plan

May is when I would book Seminyak if I only get one shot at the sunsets. Everything works and nothing is oversubscribed yet.

The honest note is the same one I would give for any month here. Seminyak is a four-day area stretched over a seven-day trip. The beach club, spa, dinner rhythm is genuinely lovely and genuinely repetitive. Use the back half of a week for Uluwatu, the Nusa islands or a couple of nights inland, and you will enjoy the Seminyak part far more.

Bali in May: A 7-Day Seminyak and Canggu Itinerary

May is when Seminyak's core promise becomes reliable. The sunsets happen, every evening, and the whole west-facing strip organises itself around them. You can book a table for a specific night and expect the sky to cooperate, which is not something you can say for five months of the year.

The crowd is a month behind the weather. Beach clubs still have daybeds available on the day, the best restaurants take bookings within a few days rather than a few weeks, and the Seminyak to Canggu road, while never quick, has not yet reached its June to August worst. May is the last month where the experience is easy rather than something you have to plan around.

Every sunset delivers, and you can still get a daybed

May

Week 4

day by day

Seminyak base with one day in Canggu. May traffic is manageable enough that Tanah Lot for sunset is a comfortable evening rather than a race.

  • Day 1: Arrive, check in, straight down for sunset.

  • Day 2: Full beach club day. In May you can still take a bed on the day.

  • Day 3: Canggu. Berawa beach and the cafes, back before the afternoon traffic.

  • Day 4: Spa, then a long dinner somewhere that will be impossible to book in July.

  • Day 5: Tanah Lot at sunset, leaving with time to spare.

  • Day 6: Uluwatu day trip, or a cooking class if you would rather stay put.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, late checkout, airport.

May is the last easy month on the strip

Book the room before June, because Seminyak's rates rise sharply once high season starts and the same property will cost noticeably more. Beach clubs can still be arranged on the day in May, though weekends are worth a call ahead and minimum spends apply at the larger ones. A car earns its cost here for the Tanah Lot sunset and the Canggu day, both of which are slow and unpleasant by scooter in traffic. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Seminyak in May?

Dry and warm, at around 27 to 31 degrees. May opens the dry season, so rain is rare and brief and humidity is comfortable. For this coast the important part is the sky at the end of the day: May sunsets are consistent, which makes the whole evening economy of the strip work as intended.

When is the best time for sunsets in Bali?

May through September, with the dry season delivering the most consistent clear evenings. July and August have the best odds and the biggest crowds at every west-facing viewpoint. May and September give you nearly the same sky with far more room, which is why they are the months to target if the sunset is the reason you are coming.

How do you get from Seminyak to Canggu?

By car or scooter, and the distance is short while the time is unpredictable. The coastal road between them is narrow and gets badly congested through the afternoon and evening, so a twenty-minute drive can easily become an hour in high season. Go in the morning and come back before the afternoon build-up.
