good to know before you plan

April is when the caldera looks its best. The rains have left the crater walls green all the way down to the lake, the cloud that hid them for three months is breaking up, and the summit path is still quiet.

A week is generous for this region, which is the point: climb Batur, and if the morning disappoints, climb again. Rates run around $130 to $240 per person for the seven days, the last of the low pricing before May starts the climb. We rate April above July for this trip, because the odds are already good and the mountain still belongs to whoever showed up.

Bali in April: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

April is when the caldera looks its best and the summit path is still quiet. The rains have left the crater walls green all the way down to the lake, and the cloud that hid them for three months is breaking up. By April the odds on a clear Batur sunrise are good, without the two hundred head torches you will share the trail with in July.

The highlands stay cold year-round, which is the thing people underestimate. Kintamani is well above a thousand metres and the summit before dawn is properly cold, whatever the coast is doing. That cold is also the point: the hot springs on the lake shore, the coffee on the rim road, the blanket in the guesthouse. April is when all of it works at once.

April

Week 2

day by day

Two nights on the rim, the rest in Ubud. April weather is settled enough that one night is defensible, but two is still the better call.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Temples in the morning, drive up to the rim in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two. April mornings are usually clear.

  • Day 4: Recovery day. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah, then nothing at all.

  • Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan, then the coffee plantations on the rim road.

  • Day 6: Back to Ubud. Ridge walk or a waterfall.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport.

April is the quiet month with dry-season odds

Book the rim room first and take two nights. April odds are good, but a second morning still costs less than a wasted trip. Trek packages should be arranged ahead since guides are required and April is when operators begin filling. A driver is the sensible choice for a 2am pickup on a steep, unlit mountain road, and one car for the day also covers the hot springs and the lake. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in April?

Clearing and cold. April is the shoulder into the dry season, so cloud over the caldera thins and clear mornings become the norm rather than the exception. Altitude keeps it cold regardless: nights on the rim run into the mid teens and the summit before dawn is colder again, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.

Is April a good month to climb Mount Batur?

One of the best, and it is underused. The odds of a clear sunrise are close to dry-season levels, but the crowds that fill the path from June onwards have not arrived, and the caldera is still green from the rains. Later in the month is more reliable than the first week.

What should you wear for the Mount Batur sunrise trek?

Warmer than you think. The climb starts around 3am in the dark and the summit is genuinely cold before sunrise, whatever the coastal temperature is. Wear shoes with grip rather than trainers, bring a jacket and a head torch, and take a layer you can add at the top rather than one you climb in.
