good to know before you plan

The driest, windiest and busiest month, with Independence Day landing in the middle of it. On Batur that means a near-continuous line of head torches on the path from around 3am and a summit that is crowded at sunrise.

Requesting the earliest available start is the one lever you have and it is worth using. Rates peak with the rest of the island, roughly $135 to $215 per person across the five days. Wind is the other August factor, and at the top before dawn it is genuinely cold. We come in August for the certainty of the weather and accept the rest, because pretending it is quiet up there would be a lie.

Bali in August: A 5-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

Five days is the sweet spot for one region of Bali, and this plan spends all of it on Kintamani and the highlands. August is the driest, windiest and busiest month, with Independence Day in the middle of it.

You split the five days between the Kintamani rim and Ubud: the pre-dawn Batur trek and the lakeside hot springs up top, then the temples and terraces of the valley below. It is one clean loop rather than a scramble across the island.

August

Week 2

day by day

Two nights on the Kintamani rim for the trek and the hot springs, then three back in Ubud. Five days covers the highlands and a little of the valley, not both in full.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Up to the rim after breakfast, hot springs in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek, earliest pickup available, back and asleep by mid morning.

  • Day 4: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan, then down to Ubud.

  • Day 5: Slow morning, then the airport with margin.

  • If 17 August falls in your week, keep that day loose. Independence Day brings flag-raising, village games and parades across the island, and it is better watched than scheduled around.

The surest sunrise of the year, if you book early

Book the rim accommodation as far ahead as possible, because August availability up here disappears months out. The trek package is the critical booking: guides are mandatory, August is the busiest month on Batur, and the operators with the earliest pickups and smallest groups sell out first. A driver handles the 2am start on a steep unlit road and covers the hot springs and the lake the following day. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in August?

Dry, clear and cold, with the best sunrise odds of the year. August is peak dry season so cloud over the caldera is uncommon. Altitude keeps it cold: nights on the rim drop into the mid teens, and the summit before dawn is colder still and often windy, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.

Is Mount Batur crowded in August?

Yes, it is the busiest month on the mountain. The summit path carries a near-continuous line of head torches from around 3am and the top at sunrise is genuinely crowded. Requesting the earliest available pickup helps. If the crowd matters to you more than the odds, September and May are the better months.

What is included in a Mount Batur trek package?

Typically hotel pickup, a licensed guide, a head torch and a simple breakfast at the summit, often eggs cooked in the volcanic steam. Guides are mandatory on Batur so every route runs through a package. What varies is group size, pickup time and whether transport from further afield such as Ubud or the south is included, so confirm these before booking.
