good to know before you plan
I will say the quiet part out loud. If your one reason for coming to Kintamani is the sunrise, do not come in February. Come in July. You will pay more and share the summit with two hundred people, and you will see the sun.
If you can be flexible, February is the month I would choose for everything else up here. The hot springs, the lake, the villages on the rim road, the drive itself. Book three nights, treat any clear morning as the trigger to go, and skip the trek entirely if it never comes. You will still have had the better trip.
Bali in February: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary
February in Kintamani is the hardest sell on this site and I am not going to pretend otherwise. It is the wettest month of the year, the caldera spends much of it under cloud, and the Mount Batur sunrise that fills the search results happens rarely.
So why come. Because the highlands in February are empty and extraordinary in a way that has nothing to do with sunrise. Cloud pours over the crater rim and clears in minutes. The lake is glassy at dawn. The hot springs at Toya Bungkah are the best they are all year, because the air is cold and the water is not. If you can let go of the photograph you came for, February gives you something better, and almost nobody else is up there to share it.
The highlands in the wet are atmospheric, cheap and often under cloud
February
Week 2

day by day
Two nights minimum on the caldera rim, three if you can. The trek is weather-dependent this month and extra nights are the only real insurance.
Day 1: Arrive, stay in Ubud, acclimatise to the pace.
Day 2: Drive up mid morning. Afternoon at the Toya Bungkah hot springs on the caldera floor.
Day 3: Trek if the sky is clear at 2am. If not, sleep, and spend the day on the rim road with a long lunch facing the volcano.
Day 4: Second attempt at the trek, or the boat across Lake Batur to Trunyan while the morning water is calm.
Day 5: Third attempt if you still have not had a clear morning, otherwise the coffee plantations on the road back south.
Day 6: Down to Ubud. Ridge walk or spa depending on the sky.
Day 7: Slow morning, airport, generous time for wet-weather traffic.

Give yourself three mornings, not one
Book the highland room first, and book more nights than feels necessary. In February each extra night on the rim is another chance at a clear summit, and it is the only thing that meaningfully improves your odds. Trek packages should be arranged ahead since guides are mandatory on Batur, but ask the operator about postponing to the next morning. A driver is close to essential: the rim road is steep, unlit and wet, and a 2am pickup is not something to organise on the day. Three links below.
frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Kintamani in February?
Cold, wet and often clouded in. Kintamani sits well above a thousand metres, so while the coast is at 27 to 31 degrees, nights on the caldera rim can drop into the mid teens. February is the wettest month of the year and low cloud sits over the crater for long stretches. Pack a real jacket.
Can you still trek Mount Batur in February?
Yes. The treks run year-round and the climb is no harder in the wet. What changes is the view. Low cloud in February means clear summit sunrises are the exception rather than the rule. Guides will usually tell you honestly at pickup whether it is worth going, and most will let you postpone to the next morning.
What is there to do in Kintamani besides the sunrise trek?
More than most itineraries admit. The natural hot springs at Toya Bungkah sit on the lake shore, heated by the same volcanic system as the mountain. Boats cross Lake Batur to Trunyan, a Bali Aga village with customs found nowhere else on the island. The rim road itself has viewpoints and coffee plantations along most of its length.
