good to know before you plan

July gives you the best chance of a clear Batur sunrise of any month, alongside August. The dry season is at its most settled, cloud over the caldera is rare, and if you book the trek you will almost certainly see what you came to see.

So the week here is not about second chances, it is about doing the region properly once the mountain is out of the way. That is the right way to spend $180 to $300 per person, which is what a July week costs. The trade is the crowd on the path, at its heaviest of the year. We would climb on the first available morning and let the rest of the week be the quiet part.

Bali in July: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

July gives you the best chance of a clear Batur sunrise of any month in the year. The dry season is at its most settled, cloud over the caldera is rare, and if you book the trek you will almost certainly see what you came to see.

You will see it with company. From 3am the summit path carries a line of head torches that does not really stop, and the top at sunrise is crowded rather than contemplative. The caldera walls have dried to brown by now, which is the landscape most people picture and the opposite of what it looks like in April. July is certainty, purchased with solitude.

The best odds on the mountain, and two hundred people on the path

July

Week 2

day by day

One night on the rim is enough in July given the weather odds. Two if you want a recovery day at the hot springs rather than a drive back down on tired legs.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Temples in the morning, up to the rim in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek. Ask for the earliest pickup your operator offers, because the path bottlenecks in July.

  • Day 4: Recovery. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah, long lunch, nothing else.

  • Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan in the morning, coffee plantations on the drive down.

  • Day 6: Ubud. Ridge walk or a waterfall, at opening.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport with margin.

Best odds of the year. Book the guide well ahead

Book the rim accommodation early, because July availability up here goes months in advance. The trek package is the booking that matters most: guides are mandatory on Batur, July is the busiest month on the mountain, and the operators with the earliest pickups and smallest groups fill first. A driver handles the 2am start on a steep unlit road, and the same car covers the hot springs and lake the following day. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in July?

The clearest of the year, and cold. July is peak dry season, so cloud over the caldera is uncommon and sunrise views are close to reliable. Altitude does the rest: nights on the rim drop into the mid teens, the summit before dawn is colder again and often windy, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.

What is the best month to climb Mount Batur?

July and August have the highest chance of a clear sunrise, and the heaviest crowds on the path. April, May and September give you good odds with far fewer people and, in the case of April and May, a green caldera rather than a brown one. Choose based on whether you value the odds or the experience more.

What time does the Mount Batur trek start?

Pickup is usually around 2am, with the climb starting near 3am and taking roughly two hours to the summit for sunrise. In July the path is congested, so an earlier pickup is worth requesting. You will be back at your accommodation by mid morning, which is why most people plan nothing else for that day.
