good to know before you plan
Peak dry season: the most dependable weather of the year and the heaviest crowds on the mountain, and you do not get one without the other. If a clear sunrise is non-negotiable, July and August give you the best odds you will find.
The cost is money and company both. Highland rates peak with the rest of the island, around $130 to $215 per person for the five days, and the summit at sunrise is genuinely busy. We think that trade is worth making once, and if you have already made the climb before, September gives you nearly the same weather with far fewer people standing in it.
Bali in July: A 5-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary
Five days is the sweet spot for one region of Bali, and this plan spends all of it on Kintamani and the highlands. July is peak dry season, the most dependable weather of the year and the busiest.
You split the five days between the Kintamani rim and Ubud: the pre-dawn Batur trek and the lakeside hot springs up top, then the temples and terraces of the valley below. It is one clean loop rather than a scramble across the island.

Best odds of the year. Book the guide well ahead
Book the rim accommodation early, because July availability up here goes months in advance. The trek package is the booking that matters most: guides are mandatory on Batur, July is the busiest month on the mountain, and the operators with the earliest pickups and smallest groups fill first. A driver handles the 2am start on a steep unlit road, and the same car covers the hot springs and lake the following day. Three links below.
frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Kintamani in July?
The clearest of the year, and cold. July is peak dry season, so cloud over the caldera is uncommon and sunrise views are close to reliable. Altitude does the rest: nights on the rim drop into the mid teens, the summit before dawn is colder again and often windy, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.
What is the best month to climb Mount Batur?
July and August have the highest chance of a clear sunrise, and the heaviest crowds on the path. April, May and September give you good odds with far fewer people and, in the case of April and May, a green caldera rather than a brown one. Choose based on whether you value the odds or the experience more.
What time does the Mount Batur trek start?
Pickup is usually around 2am, with the climb starting near 3am and taking roughly two hours to the summit for sunrise. In July the path is congested, so an earlier pickup is worth requesting. You will be back at your accommodation by mid morning, which is why most people plan nothing else for that day.
