good to know before you plan

By June the Batur sunrise is close to a sure thing. The dry season is established, the cloud that ruled the caldera through the wet months has gone, and most mornings deliver what you came for.

That certainty changes the job from chasing weather to booking early. From June the better guides fill days ahead, so the trek wants arranging before you arrive rather than the night before. A week costs around $160 to $270 per person, with highland rates following the island into high season. We use the spare mornings for the rim road and the lake rather than holding them back for a second attempt.

Bali in June: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

June is when the Batur sunrise becomes something close to a sure thing. The dry season is established, the cloud that ruled the caldera through the wet months has gone, and most mornings deliver exactly what you came for.

It is also when the trail starts to fill. From June the summit path carries a steady line of head torches from 3am, and the top at sunrise is shared rather than solitary. The caldera is beginning to dry out too, with the green from the rains fading towards the brown it holds through August. You are trading the landscape and the solitude for certainty, which for a lot of people is the right trade.

Reliable sunrises, and the trail is starting to get busy

day by day

One night on the rim is defensible in June, though two still gives you a spare morning and a proper recovery day.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Temples in the morning, up to the rim in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two. Expect company on the path.

  • Day 4: Recovery. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah, long lunch, nothing else.

  • Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan, coffee plantations on the drive down.

  • Day 6: Ubud. Ridge walk or a waterfall, early to stay ahead of the buses.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport.

Great odds in June. Book the guide early

Book the rim room first, since high season tightens availability up here quickly. Trek packages matter most: guides are mandatory on Batur and from June the better operators fill several days out, so compare and book before you arrive rather than at the guesthouse desk. A driver handles the 2am pickup on a steep unlit road and covers the hot springs and the lake crossing the next day. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in June?

Dry, clear and cold at altitude. June is the dry season proper, so clear sunrise mornings are the norm on the caldera. The temperature is the thing to plan for: nights on the rim drop into the mid teens and the summit before dawn is colder again, while the coast stays at 27 to 31 degrees.

How early do you need to book the Mount Batur trek in high season?

From June onwards, at least several days ahead, and earlier for July and August. Guides are mandatory on Batur and the better operators fill first, so leaving it to the night before increasingly means taking whoever has space. Booking ahead also lets you confirm what is included and the group size.

Is the caldera green or brown at Mount Batur?

It depends on the month, and the photographs online rarely say which. From roughly December to May the crater walls are green from the rains. Through the dry season they dry out to brown, and by August the landscape is noticeably more barren. June sits in the transition, with the green fading but not gone.
