good to know before you plan

June is the tipping point. The weather has settled and so have the prices, around $115 to $195 per person for the five days, and it is the first month where numbers on the mountain climb properly.

The practical consequence is booking. From June onwards the trek needs arranging at least several days ahead, and the better operators fill first, so leaving it to the night before increasingly means taking whoever is left. Guides are mandatory on Batur, so this is not a corner you can cut. We book the trek before the accommodation in June, which is the reverse of how most people plan it.

Bali in June: A 5-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

Five days is the sweet spot for one region of Bali, and this plan spends all of it on Kintamani and the highlands. June is dry and settled, and the first month where high-season prices and numbers start to climb.

You split the five days between the Kintamani rim and Ubud: the pre-dawn Batur trek and the lakeside hot springs up top, then the temples and terraces of the valley below. It is one clean loop rather than a scramble across the island.

Five days for the Batur sunrise in June, with the odds now firmly in your favour

  • Day 2: Up to the rim after breakfast, hot springs in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two, back and asleep by mid morning.

  • Day 4: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan, then down to Ubud.

Great odds in June. Book the guide early

Book the rim room first, since high season tightens availability up here quickly. Trek packages matter most: guides are mandatory on Batur and from June the better operators fill several days out, so compare and book before you arrive rather than at the guesthouse desk. A driver handles the 2am pickup on a steep unlit road and covers the hot springs and the lake crossing the next day. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in June?

Dry, clear and cold at altitude. June is the dry season proper, so clear sunrise mornings are the norm on the caldera. The temperature is the thing to plan for: nights on the rim drop into the mid teens and the summit before dawn is colder again, while the coast stays at 27 to 31 degrees.

How early do you need to book the Mount Batur trek in high season?

From June onwards, at least several days ahead, and earlier for July and August. Guides are mandatory on Batur and the better operators fill first, so leaving it to the night before increasingly means taking whoever has space. Booking ahead also lets you confirm what is included and the group size.

Is the caldera green or brown at Mount Batur?

It depends on the month, and the photographs online rarely say which. From roughly December to May the crater walls are green from the rains. Through the dry season they dry out to brown, and by August the landscape is noticeably more barren. June sits in the transition, with the green fading but not gone.
