good to know before you plan
March is the turn. The rain that sat over the caldera for three months starts breaking up, and mornings that were a coin flip in January become a reasonable bet.
You are not in dry-season territory yet, but a week gives you enough attempts that the odds stop mattering much. Rates stay low through March while the weather improves, around $110 to $220 per person for the seven days, which is the best ratio of value to conditions on the calendar. Nyepi falls somewhere in the month and closes the island completely for a day, so we would find that date before booking anything else.
Bali in March: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary
March is the turn. The rain that sat over the caldera for three months starts breaking up, and the mornings that were a coin flip in January become a reasonable bet. You are not in dry-season territory yet, but you are no longer gambling.
The highlands are also at their most beautiful right now, and this is not a small point. Three months of rain have left the caldera walls green all the way down to the lake, the coffee plantations along the rim road are heavy, and the air up here is cold and clean in a way the coast never is. Come in July and you get the sunrise and a crowd of two hundred. Come in March and you get most of the odds with a fraction of the people.
The clouds start lifting, and March is when Batur becomes worth booking
March
Week 2

day by day
Two nights on the rim gives you two mornings and enough margin. Base the rest of the trip in Ubud, which is under an hour down the hill.
Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.
Day 2: Temples in the morning, then up to Kintamani in the afternoon. Check in on the rim and go to bed early.
Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two. March mornings are far more likely to be clear than they were a month ago.
Day 4: Recovery. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah on the caldera floor, then nothing.
Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan in the morning, then the coffee plantations on the drive back down.
Day 6: Ubud. Campuhan Ridge Walk or a waterfall, depending on how your legs feel.
Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport.
If Nyepi falls during your stay, the day before belongs to the Ogoh-Ogoh parades and the day itself is spent inside your accommodation. Shift everything above by one day.

March gives you the sunrise odds without the July queue
Book the room on the rim first, and book two nights. March odds are good but not guaranteed, and a second morning is the only real insurance. Trek packages need arranging ahead since guides are mandatory on Batur, and March is when the better operators start filling up. A driver is close to essential for a 2am pickup on a steep, unlit road, and the same car covers the hot springs and the lake. Three links below.
frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Kintamani in March?
Improving but not settled. The rainy season is ending, so cloud over the caldera is less persistent than in January and February and clear mornings become common. It stays cold at altitude: nights on the rim can drop into the mid teens while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees. Bring a warm layer regardless.
When is the best month for the Mount Batur sunrise trek?
July and August have the highest chance of a clear summit, and the largest crowds on the path. March through June gives you good odds with far fewer people, which many find the better trade. January and February are the months to avoid if the sunrise itself is the point.
Does Nyepi affect the Mount Batur trek?
Yes. Nothing runs on Nyepi, including treks, and you cannot leave your accommodation for the full twenty-four hours. If your trip covers Nyepi, treat that day as a fixed blank in the schedule and plan the trek for a different morning. The airport also closes, which affects arrival and departure dates.
