good to know before you plan
May and April are the two months I would actually choose for Batur, and May is the safer of the two. You are past the transition and into settled weather without being into the crowds.
The thing worth knowing is that the trail changes character from June. What is a quiet climb in May becomes a slow-moving line in July, and the summit at sunrise is genuinely crowded in August. If the experience matters as much as the photograph, book May and do not wait.
Bali in May: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary
May is the last month you get the Batur summit largely to yourself. The dry season has opened, so clear mornings are the norm rather than a gamble, but the June to August rush has not started and the trail is not a procession of head torches.
The caldera itself is still carrying the wet season's green, which is the thing photographs from July never show. By August the crater walls have dried to brown. In May they run green from the rim down to the lake, and the coffee plantations along the road are heavy. Good odds, green landscape, no queue. That combination exists for about six weeks.

Week 2

day by day
Two nights on the rim is still the right call, though in May one night is a defensible gamble. Base the rest in Ubud.
Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.
Day 2: Temples in the morning, up to the rim in the afternoon, early night.
Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two. May mornings are reliably clear.
Day 4: Recovery. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah, then a long lunch facing the volcano.
Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan, then the coffee plantations on the drive down.
Day 6: Ubud. Ridge walk or a waterfall, depending on your legs.
Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport.

Book May before the trail fills in June
Book the rim room first, and take two nights if your dates allow. Trek packages matter more here than anywhere else on the island, since guides are mandatory and May is when the good operators start filling for the season, so compare before you arrive rather than at the guesthouse desk. A driver handles the 2am pickup on a steep unlit road and covers the hot springs and lake the following day. Three links below.
frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Kintamani in May?
Dry and cold. May opens the dry season, so cloud over the caldera thins out and clear sunrise mornings become the norm. Altitude keeps the temperature down regardless of season: nights on the rim run into the mid teens and the summit before dawn is colder still, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.
How crowded is the Mount Batur trek?
It depends entirely on the month. In May the path is busy but moving. From June through August it can be a slow-moving line of several hundred people, and the summit at sunrise is genuinely crowded. January and February are the quietest months on the trail, for the obvious reason.
Do you need a guide for Mount Batur?
Yes. Guides are required on Batur and independent climbing is not permitted, which is why every route to the summit runs through a package. Prices and quality vary, so ask what is included, whether breakfast is provided at the top, and what happens if cloud means the guide recommends postponing.
