good to know before you plan

November closes the window. The rains return, cloud settles over the caldera through most of the day, and the sunrise that was close to reliable in September becomes a gamble again.

Guides still run the trek every morning, and a week gives enough attempts to make that worth trying rather than pointless. Highland rates hit their yearly low, around $110 to $220 per person for seven days, which is the compensation. We would come in November for the caldera in the green and the empty rim road, and treat the summit as the thing you attempt rather than the thing you booked.

Bali in November: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

November closes the window on Batur. The rains return, cloud settles over the caldera through most of the day, and the clear sunrise that was close to reliable in September becomes a genuine gamble again. Guides still run the trek every morning and people still book it.

What November offers instead is the highlands at their most atmospheric and their cheapest. Cloud moving through a crater is a sight in its own right, the hot springs at Toya Bungkah make far more sense in cold wet air than in August heat, and the green starts returning to the caldera walls within weeks. Come for the landscape and the price, and treat a clear morning as a lucky break.

The cloud returns, so book this month for the hot springs, not the summit

November

Week 2

day by day

Three nights on the rim if the summit matters to you, because in November each morning is an independent roll of the dice. Two if you are here for everything else.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Drive up mid morning. Afternoon at the Toya Bungkah hot springs on the caldera floor.

  • Day 3: Trek if the sky is clear at 2am. If not, sleep, and spend the day on the rim road with a long lunch facing the crater.

  • Day 4: Second attempt at the trek, or the boat across Lake Batur to Trunyan while the morning water is calm.

  • Day 5: Third attempt if you still have not had a clear morning, otherwise the coffee plantations on the road south.

  • Day 6: Down to Ubud. Ridge walk or spa depending on the sky.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport with generous time for wet-weather traffic.

Come for the hot springs, not the sunrise

Book the rim room first, and book more nights than you think you need if the summit matters, because in November each extra morning is another independent chance. Trek packages should still be arranged ahead since guides are mandatory, but ask specifically about postponing to the following morning. A driver is close to essential on a steep, unlit and now wet mountain road, and the same car covers the hot springs and the lake. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in November?

Wet and cold, with cloud over the caldera for much of the day. November starts the rainy season, so clear sunrise mornings become uncommon. Altitude keeps the temperature low: nights on the rim run into the mid teens and feel colder in the damp, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees. A waterproof layer matters as much as a warm one.

Should you book the Mount Batur trek in November?

Only if you can be flexible. The trek runs year-round and the climb itself is no harder in the wet, but cloud over the caldera means clear sunrises are the exception in November. If your dates allow two or three mornings on the rim, the odds improve considerably. With a single attempt, treat it as a gamble.

What else is there to do in Kintamani in the wet season?

The hot springs at Toya Bungkah are better in cold wet weather than in dry heat, and they sit on the lake shore beneath the volcano. Lake Batur crossings to Trunyan still run, best taken in the morning before the wind builds. The rim road has viewpoints and coffee plantations, and the caldera walls green up quickly once the rains start.
