good to know before you plan

September is what I would book, and I would book the second half of it. The odds are barely below August and the summit is a completely different experience without three hundred people on it.

The honest note is about the landscape. After five months of dry season the caldera walls are brown and dusty and the lake sits lower. If you have seen photographs of a green crater and that is what you are expecting, you want April or May. September is the month for the sunrise and the calm, not for the scenery.

Bali in September: A 7-Day Kintamani and Highlands Itinerary

September is the smart month on Batur. The dry season is still running so the sunrise odds remain close to their peak, but the July and August queue on the summit path has broken up. You get most of the certainty and a fraction of the crowd.

The caldera is at its driest now, brown rather than green, which is worth knowing if the landscape matters as much as the sunrise. What you also get is the wind dropping, which makes the summit less punishing before dawn and the lake calmer for a morning crossing to Trunyan. For a highland week, September is the most comfortable month of the year up here.

Almost the July odds, almost the April quiet

September

Week 2

day by day

Two nights on the rim still gives you a spare morning and a proper recovery day, though September weather makes one night a reasonable bet.

  • Day 1: Arrive, sleep in Ubud.

  • Day 2: Temples in the morning, up to the rim in the afternoon, early night.

  • Day 3: Batur summit trek, pickup around two. September odds are close to August with a fraction of the path traffic.

  • Day 4: Recovery. Hot springs at Toya Bungkah, long lunch facing the volcano.

  • Day 5: Lake Batur by boat to Trunyan. September is the calmest water of the year.

  • Day 6: Ubud. Ridge walk or a waterfall.

  • Day 7: Slow morning, then the airport.

September is the smart month on Batur

Book the rim room first, since September availability is far better than August but the well-placed guesthouses still fill. Trek packages need arranging ahead because guides are mandatory on Batur, though you have more choice of operator this month than at any point since May. A driver handles the 2am start on a steep unlit road and covers the hot springs and lake the next day. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kintamani in September?

Dry, clear and cold, with the wind easing from its August peak. Cloud over the caldera is uncommon, so sunrise odds stay close to their best. Altitude keeps the temperature down: nights on the rim run into the mid teens and the summit before dawn is colder again, while the coast sits at 27 to 31 degrees.

Is September a good month for the Mount Batur trek?

It is arguably the best compromise of the year. Sunrise odds stay close to the July and August peak while the crowds on the summit path thin out considerably, and the wind drops, which makes waiting for sunrise at the top far more comfortable. The caldera at its brownest is the trade.

Can you do the Mount Batur trek from Ubud?

Yes, and most packages offer it. Pickup from Ubud is usually around 1.30 to 2am, adding an hour or more to an already early start. Staying a night in Kintamani instead cuts that transfer out entirely and gives you a second morning if cloud spoils the first, which is why it is worth doing when your schedule allows.
