good to know before you plan

The trek is worth doing and the one-day format is the wrong way to do it, unless your schedule leaves no choice. Being collected from the south coast at one in the morning adds two hours of driving to each end of an already hard day.

Sleep on the caldera rim the night before and the whole thing becomes reasonable: a short transfer instead of a long one, and a chance of arriving rested. The package itself is cheap, around $10 to $30 per person including guide, breakfast and transport, so the overnight is the part worth spending on. Expect a 2am start and roughly two hours of steep walking in the dark. We rate the trek highly and the one-day version poorly, and those two things are not in conflict.

Sunrise Adventure: Mount Batur & Kintamani in a Day

This is the one-day version of Bali's most popular trek. Pickup around two in the morning, an hour or more of driving into the highlands, roughly two hours climbing in the dark, and the summit for sunrise over the caldera and Lake Batur. You are back at your hotel by mid morning.

It is a genuinely early start and a genuinely rewarding one. The climb is steep but needs no technical skill, guides are mandatory and handle the route, and most operators cook eggs in the volcanic steam at the top. The whole thing is over before the rest of the island has had breakfast, which is the appeal and the difficulty in equal measure.

Awake at two, on the summit by five, back before lunch

day by day

A single-region day trip into the Kintamani highlands, roughly one and a half to two hours from Ubud or the south coast. Considerably easier if you sleep on the caldera rim the night before.

  • Pre-dawn: Hotel pickup around two in the morning for the drive to the trailhead.

  • Early morning: Roughly two hours climbing in the dark, timed to reach the summit for sunrise over the caldera and Lake Batur.

  • Morning: Breakfast at the top, often eggs cooked in the volcanic steam, then the descent.

  • Late morning: Back at your accommodation by mid morning. Plan nothing else for this day.

Sleep closer and start later

Consider a room in Kintamani rather than a pickup from the south. A night on the caldera rim cuts two hours of driving out of a 2am start and gives you a second morning if cloud spoils the first, and highland rooms are inexpensive. The trek package needs booking ahead since guides are mandatory, and the operators with early pickups and small groups fill first. A driver handles a steep unlit road in the dark. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

How hard is the Mount Batur sunrise trek?

Moderate rather than technical. It is around two hours of steep uphill walking on a well-worn path, in the dark, with no climbing skill required. Reasonable fitness and shoes with grip are enough. The parts people find hardest are the 2am start, the cold at the summit and the loose surface on the descent.

Do you need a guide for Mount Batur?

Yes. Guides are mandatory and climbing independently is not permitted, so every ascent runs through a package. These typically include pickup, the guide, a head torch and breakfast at the top. What varies is group size, pickup time and whether transport from the south coast is included, so check before booking.

What should you bring on the Mount Batur trek?

A warm jacket, because the summit before dawn is cold whatever the coastal temperature. Shoes with grip rather than trainers, since the descent is loose underfoot. Water, a head torch if the operator does not supply one, and cash for entrance fees and tips. Long trousers are more comfortable than shorts in the wind at the top.
