Neither is wrong, they are different holidays. We think five days is the right length here in any month, and in August it is also about as long as the crowd stays fun.

You stay on the Kuta and Legian strip and let it come to you: the beach and the surf in the mornings, the water park on a quieter day, Jalan Legian after dark, and one run south to Uluwatu for the cliffs and the Kecak dance. Everything else is a walk away.

One hotel in Kuta or Legian, everything on foot, with a single afternoon out to Uluwatu. Five days keeps you on the strip without it wearing thin.
Day 1: Land, check in, straight to the beach for sunset. Nothing else planned.
Day 2: Waterbom Bali at opening, before the queues build.
Day 3: Surf lesson in the morning while the swell is cleanest, then Jalan Legian after dark.
Day 4: Uluwatu. Leave early afternoon and be at the temple before the Kecak seating fills.
Day 5: Last swim, late checkout if you can get it, airport.
If 17 August falls in your week, keep that day loose. Independence Day brings flag-raising, village games and parades across the island, and it is better watched than scheduled around.

Book the room first. In August it is both your biggest cost and the thing most likely to sell out, so compare hotel prices before anything else. Activities are more forgiving: check packages once your dates are set, and book Waterbom and the surf lesson a few days ahead rather than at the gate.
