good to know before you plan

January is the month to be honest about the beach. Heavy rain pushes debris onto this stretch of coast and it takes time to clear, so the sand is not at its best even when the sun is out.

The water stays warm and the surf still works for lessons, which is the saving grace, and bright mornings are your window before the afternoon rain arrives. Kuta sits at the bottom of its yearly range, around $80 to $160 per person for the five days. We would come in January for the price and the surf lesson, not for five days of sunbathing.

Bali in January: A 5-Day Kuta and Legian Itinerary

Five days is the sweet spot for one region of Bali, and this plan spends all of it on Kuta and Legian. January is the peak of the wet season, so bright mornings are your window and the afternoons belong to the rain.

You stay on the Kuta and Legian strip and let it come to you: the beach and the surf in the mornings, the water park on a quieter day, Jalan Legian after dark, and one run south to Uluwatu for the cliffs and the Kecak dance. Everything else is a walk away.

Five low-season days on the Kuta strip, where the rain never reaches the bars

January

Week 3

day by day

One hotel in Kuta or Legian, everything on foot, with a single afternoon out to Uluwatu. Five days keeps you on the strip without it wearing thin.

  • Day 1: Arrive, check in, sunset on the beach or a bar depending on the sky.

  • Day 2: Surf lesson in the morning, sleep in the afternoon, Jalan Legian after dark.

  • Day 3: Waterbom Bali, far better in the rain than it sounds and empty this month.

  • Day 4: Uluwatu in the afternoon for the temple and the Kecak dance, leaving early for wet-season traffic.

  • Day 5: Last swim, checkout, airport with time in hand.

January is Kuta at its lowest price of the year

Book the room first, because that is where the January saving actually is. The same hotel that sells out in August is open and cheap now, so compare before you commit. Activities barely need booking this month, though the surf lesson is worth arranging the day before so you get the morning slot when the water is cleanest. A car matters less here than anywhere else in Bali since the strip is walkable, but you will want one for the Uluwatu run. Three links below.

frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Kuta in January?

Warm, humid and wet. Expect 27 to 31 degrees, clear mornings most days, and heavy rain in the afternoon that usually passes within a couple of hours. The sea is warmer than in the dry season and the surf is messier. After several days of rain, debris washes up on this beach, which is worth knowing before you book.

Is Kuta beach still good in the rainy season?

The water is warm and the surf still works for lessons, but the beach is not at its best. Heavy rain pushes debris onto this stretch of coast and it takes days to clear. Mornings are cleaner than afternoons. If you want guaranteed clean sand in January, Nusa Dua and Sanur on the east coast are the better bet.

Is Kuta nightlife busy in January?

Yes. Kuta and Legian are one of the few parts of Bali where the low season barely shows after dark. Jalan Legian runs every night regardless of the weather, and the crowd is smaller but not thin. What changes in January is the price of your room, not the atmosphere of the street.
