good to know before you plan
May is the last shoulder pricing before high season, around $100 to $180 per person for five days. Busier than April, far quieter than July, which is a good place to sit.
The dry season has opened so the beach and the surf are both at their best, and the bars are lively without being crowded. This is also where the swell starts working properly on the west coast. Five days is about as long as the strip stays interesting, so we would give the fifth day to Uluwatu rather than another afternoon on the same sand.
Bali in May: A 5-Day Kuta and Legian Itinerary
Five days is the sweet spot for one region of Bali, and this plan spends all of it on Kuta and Legian. May opens the dry season, reliably clear and still ahead of the crowds.
You stay on the Kuta and Legian strip and let it come to you: the beach and the surf in the mornings, the water park on a quieter day, Jalan Legian after dark, and one run south to Uluwatu for the cliffs and the Kecak dance. Everything else is a walk away.

The last month before the strip fills
Book the room before June, because Kuta's rates climb steeply once high season starts and the same hotel will cost meaningfully more in six weeks. Surf lessons and Waterbom are still easy to arrange a couple of days ahead in May, which will not be true in July. A car is only needed for the Uluwatu run, but that afternoon is worth planning properly now that the weather is dependable. Three links below.
frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Kuta in May?
Dry and dependable. May opens the dry season, so rain is uncommon and short-lived, humidity drops and full clear days are the norm. Temperatures sit around 27 to 31 degrees, the sea is warm, and the beach is clean after the wet-season debris has cleared.
Is Kuta busy in May?
Busier than April, far quieter than July. May is the last shoulder month before high season, so the beach and the bars are lively without being crowded, and you can still get a table or a hotel room at short notice. From June the numbers climb quickly.
Is Kuta or Legian better to stay in?
They run into each other along the same beach, so the difference is one of degree. Kuta is louder, cheaper and closer to the main nightlife on Jalan Legian. Legian is a few minutes north, slightly calmer, and usually less crowded in the water for a surf lesson. Families often prefer Legian, first-time party trips usually pick Kuta.
