This Bali Zoo program is built around welfare-focused, guided contact with the zoo's Sumatran elephants rather than performances or rides.
After arrival at Kampung Sumatra inside the zoo, an English-speaking mahout introduces the elephants' daily care routine and the welfare rules that shape the session, no forcing, chasing, or controlling the animals, with any interaction dependent on the elephants' own comfort. Guests then observe the elephants at a mahout-approved distance as they move through mud and water areas, including the mud bath elephants use naturally to regulate body temperature and skin health.
The program includes zoo admission, so there's time afterward to walk through the wider grounds and see the rest of Bali Zoo's animals. An optional upgrade adds a guided breakfast near the orangutan enclosure.
Our Review
The important word is care. There are no rides and no performances here: a mahout explains the welfare rules, and interaction only goes as far as the elephants are willing, including a mud bath the animals use to regulate their own temperature rather than one staged for photographs.
At around seventy-nine dollars for seven hours this is not a cheap morning, though zoo admission is included and you can walk the rest of the grounds afterwards. It is recommended for ages twelve and up, and children who meet the 120cm mark are charged the adult rate, which is worth checking against your group before booking. We think the welfare framing is the reason to pick this one.
