Full Description

Staged at a temple in the Ubud area, this Kecak and Fire Dance show is one of several such performances that run most nights across the town. The dance is built entirely around the human voice, a group of performers chant and move in unison to create the rhythm, with no instruments involved.

The performance tells part of the Ramayana story, narrated by a dalang (storyteller) as the pace builds from a slow start into a more intense, trance-like sequence. A fire segment appears later in the show.

Because several Ubud venues run their own version of the show on different nights, the exact location depends on which date and option is booked, check the voucher for the specific venue before heading out.

Our Review

Six dollars, and the venue is not fixed. Several Ubud temples run their own version on different nights, so the location depends on the date you book. Check the voucher before setting off, because this is the mistake people make.

The dance is built entirely on the human voice, a group chanting and moving in unison with no instruments at all, telling part of the Ramayana with a dalang narrating as the pace builds. Fire comes later in the show. Gates open somewhere between six and half past seven for a seven o'clock start. We turn up thirty minutes early, which is the difference between a good seat and a bad one, and we bring a layer because the evenings run cool up here.
